What is BIM (Building Information Modeling)
BIM stands for “Building Information Modeling” or a Building Information Model.
The NIBS (National Institutes of Building Science) defines BIM as the “digital representation of physical and functional characteristics of an object”.
The term “BIM” is also used to indicate the new generation of 3D architectural CADs that are not limited to the design of simple graphic elements (lines, polylines, circles, arcs, etc.), but allow to design by drawing the technical components of the building (walls, load-bearing structures, windows, doors, etc.).
A BIM model contains information about the building or its parts such as geographic location, geometry, materials and technical elements, construction phases, maintenance operations. The BIM allows to integrate within a model all the information useful in every design phase, from the architectural to the executive one (structures, systems, safety, maintenance, energy performance, etc.) and management (metric calculations, suppliers, etc. ).
BIM is a collaborative and integration-based method of design.
